L-R: GLSD Art Conservation Trust’s Keith Visconti and Barbara Nakles along with members of the class of 1972 Tracey McCarthy Downs, Patty Moore McDonough, Debra Rullo Bumar, Ruth Lantzy Menoher and Maria Battaglia Peluso presented the painting Light Overcoming by Rachel Dawn Kling.

Greater Latrobe Senior High School is pleased to announce the 2023 art acquisitions for the Special Art
Collection are Reflections on 9-11 by Geoffrey Joseph and Light Overcoming by Rachel Dawn Kling. Each
year, high school students vote and purchase a piece of artwork to add to the Special Art Collection. This
tradition started in 1936 by two teachers, Mary Martha Himler and James R. Beatty, and it continues today.
Due to the transition to the current high school and retirement of James Beatty as Student Council advisor no
paintings were purchased during a six-year period from 1969 through 1974.The Class of 1972 has made a
donation for the purchase of Light Overcoming by Rachel Dawn Kling to represent their graduation year in the
Special Art Collection. The painting was one of the top five favorites of the current student body. With this
addition, all the missing years are now represented in the halls of Greater Latrobe Senior High School. The
GLSD Art Conservation Trust was formed in 1991, at the recommendation of Mr. Beatty, to oversee the care
and conservation of the Special Art Collection and the Art Trust now cares for the art collections in each school
building and supports numerous special projects and programs that promote the creative arts for students.
The Art Trust hosts the Annual Art Gala on the first Thursday of November and next year’s event will take
place on November 7, 2024.
