During Latrobe’s first month of school, a wave of illnesses swept through the hallways. From coughs to fevers to rashes, it felt like nearly everyone caught something. The outbreak seemed to begin with the volleyball team’s cases of mononucleosis. Athlete Lizzy Heitchue, shared the challenges of balancing her health with school and sports. She had to sit out her first two varsity games to let her spleen recover, which was difficult for her. The experience has changed her perspective on sharing food and drinks with others.
I also spoke with tennis player Emma Balega, who came down with a new strain of COVID-19. She missed a full week of school and suspects she picked it up at work. Despite her illness, she says her outlook on health and cleanliness has not changed. These are just two examples of the many students impacted this month. Other illnesses, such as lice and hand, foot, and mouth disease, also made their way through the building. While this wave of sickness was tough, students continue to adapt and push forward with their school year.
