Creativity From Quarantine 2020

Amid the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, the majority of Pennsylvania residents have been staying home to protect themselves and their community from the virus.

With so much time at home, particularly while Westmoreland County was stuck in the red zone, students have been creatively finding ways to occupy themselves. Here are six students who shared their creative projects that emerged from the quarantined days!

“During quarantine, I discovered a new hobby of building puzzles! I normally build a 1,000 piece puzzle in about 1-3 days, depending on how busy I am. It takes up a large chunk of time and helps with my boredom.” -Brianna Holt

“These are called Psunky eggs, or Ukrainian eggs. My family is ukrainian so one of the traditions around Easter time is to make these eggs. Since I have had a lot of time in quarantine, I have made many of them. These eggs are made by taking wax and putting it on the egg, dipping the egg in a different color, and covering the places you want the color to stay with wax. I use a tool called a kistka to apply the wax. It works similarly to a pen. Once all of the egg is decorated, you melt the wax off and blow the inside of the egg out.” -Autumn Pavlik
“One way I have kept myself busy through this pandemic is growing in my photography skills. I’m enrolled in the photography class but aside from that I enjoy doing it in my free time. This photo is just one example of many that I have been working on. Although images alone are simple it has a deeper and darker meaning. Photography is a great way to capture memories and current events as well as a super fun hobby to pass the time!!” -Hannah Gentilo

“One project I did during quarantine is actually an ongoing project! I created an instagram page for self love and sharing my journey of recovery from an eating disorder in hopes of helping others! The username is @elena.s.journey if you want to check it out!” -Elena Sarp
“This past quarantine, I have found a lot more time for culinary arts! Being able to start food earlier in the day has allowed me to be more adventurous and make things such as this vanilla latte ice cream, which mixes the warmth of vanilla and the strength of coffee in a soft serve setting.” -Isaac Krom
“Right around when school first let out, I decided to make a sock puppet. I remember sitting on my floor when I was struck with the idea, so I went and dug around downstairs in search of any and all craft supplies that we had. Who would have thought that it would take a global pandemic to show me the joy that creating a sock puppet can bring!” -Allison Himler
