With four Section championships, two WPIAL championships, three PIAA championship appearances, and multiple all section players in the last four years, Greater Latrobe’s softball team has a tradition of excellence. This year will be no exception.

Winning .733% of their games, Latrobe’s current record is 11-4-0. Only two of those losses were section games, both against Hempfield. When asked about their loss, Carmelena Moffa, second base player, said, “Even though we lost, we’re still going to WPIALs. That will get us farther than section champions, if we do well.”

Carmelena is one of four players on this year’s team to win MSA Network’s Sweet 16 Player of the Week. Along with Carmelena, Marissa Larkin, Rebecca Taylor, and Kelsie Zoppetti received this honor. Kelsie, playing for the varsity team since her freshmen year, is Latrobe’s catcher. Rebecca, a pitcher and first baseman, won after a terrific game against Hempfield. Marissa, a utility player, was recognized for her outstanding play against Connellsville.

Emily Yokopenic, junior, sums up the year by saying, “It’s been a fun season and I think we played hard the whole way through it, so hopefully we can go far in the playoffs.”

Playoffs started on May 16 for Latrobe at Hempfield’s field. The Wildcats defeated Fox Chapel 13-2. The next game is May 23 at Hampton. Ms. Mitchell, assistant coach, said, “I think we have a team that is talented enough to win WPIALs and the state. We need to stay focused and remember the little things. That will be the key.”
