As students anticipate Christmas break and the special family traditions and memories made each year, some may also be planning what to do during the break. Holiday events around the region can be enjoyed on a cold and snowy day, in the warmth of the indoors.

St. Vincent Summer Theater’s “It’s a Wonderful Life, a Live Radio Play.”
One of the most beloved holiday tales of all time comes to life in this dazzling theatrical adaptation. In a Manhattan radio station on Christmas Eve, 1946, five actors play dozens of characters and you play their studio audience! See the classic tale of George Baily in a fresh and captivating way.

Cirque Dreams: Holidaze
Created and directed by Neil Goldberg, Cirque Dreams: Holidaze is an original new musical extravaganza filled with spectacle, imagination and whimsical dreams. Ornaments come to life as costumed characters who perform astonishing feats that celebrate the holiday season and showcase pageantry, ingenuity and breathtaking artistry. An international cast of acrobats, aerialists, singers, dancers and musicians fill this Cirque Dream on stage, in the air and while dangling from a 24 foot tall magical tree.

Harlem Globetrotters
The Harlem Globetrotters, who have contributed more innovations to the game of basketball than any other team in history, have implemented the first-ever 4-point shot as part of all of its games on the team’s 2011 ’4 Times the Fun” North American tour. This game-changing innovation will be on display when the Globetrotters take on the Washington Generals.

Holiday Tours of the Clayton Mansion
Christmas is always a special time at the Frick and particularly at Clayton, where holiday decorations and artifacts on display evoke the traditions and celebrations of the late 19th century.    Live poinsettias grace the hearths, fresh greens lend the scent of pine to the air and a freshly-cut, decorated tree stands on the enclosed porch. In the dining room, visitors see the table set with fine china, gilded glassware and silver for an elaborate holiday dinner.

Pittsburgh Memories
Pittsburgh Memories celebrates the winter season in Downtown Pittsburgh through photos dating from the 1880s through the 1970s. The images are copies culled from important regional archives at Photo Antiquities, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, the Senator John Heinz Regional History Center, the University of Pittsburgh and even a few private companies. The exhibit originally ran from 1997-2005 and is being reprised in 2010. Open during regular Mall hours.
