Greater Latrobe Senior High School’s Principles of Flight class, taught by Mrs. Campbell, toured Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA) in West Mifflin on October 30th, 2024 to learn about opportunities available to enter the aviation maintenance field through different associate degree and certification programs offered at the school. Students toured classrooms and lab spaces where PIA students learn, through hands-on experiences, the skills to inspect, repair, maintain, and overhaul a huge variety of aircraft. Some labs include propulsion, avionics, and the main hangar. There is a tremendous need for new graduates in this industry as 40% of the current workforce readies to retire and new growth continues. Skills provided at PIA allow students to work in numerous sectors, including commercial, cargo, and corporate aviation, aircraft manufacturing, military, medical transport, unmanned aircraft, and space, as well as recreational and general aviation.
