Greater Latrobe Capstone students recently visited the Carrie Blast Furnace site in Braddock, PA.
This trip was a mixture of history, art, and science. Students toured the historic facility and
learned how important iron and steel were to Pittsburgh in the early 1900’s as well as how
difficult the working conditions were. During World War II there were multiple military facilities
in Pittsburgh for the sole purpose of protecting the steel and iron industry, which highlights how
important the city was to the war effort. They also toured multiple murals, statues, forged art,
and more. Finally, they performed water quality tests on the Monongahela River. At the height
of the blast furnace production the river was essentially dead of all life, but today the water
quality has improved dramatically and supports a wide variety of living creatures.
