Greater Latrobe Capstone students recently experienced electrofishing at Rotary Park. This is a process where a current is put through the stream which causes the fish to take a gulp of air so they float temporarily. Students are then able to capture them in nets and put them into buckets so we can identify the species that are in the stream. Certain species, like the rainbow darter, can only live in clean streams so they are an indicator of good water quality and a healthy stream. The fish are then released back into the stream after identification. Thank you to Josh Penatzer of Loyalhanna Watershed Association for bringing the electrofishing equipment.
