On Tuesday, October 8th, six Greater Latrobe Spanish and French students attended a day of competition and
exploration at Slippery Rock University. The students along with World Language department teachers Mrs.
Zalewski and Ms. Gwynn were joined by over 500 world language teachers and students from all over Western
Pennsylvania.
Each of the students competed in French and Spanish language tests, as well as an exploration of language
and participated in a Discovery Quest led by Slippery Rock World Language students and faculty. Our students
made Frida Kahlo dolls, answered geography trivia, learned about study abroad opportunities, and learned
Japanese printing.
Mrs. Zalewski and Ms. Gwynn attended a World Language workshop with other language teachers from
Western Pennsylvania schools led by Dr. Gisela Dieter. The day ended with awards and speakers from
Slippery Rock faculty, who encouraged the students to incorporate languages and new cultures into their lives
to accompany their career choices as a way to gain new perspectives and opportunities for travel and work
around the world.
