Greater Latrobe Capstone students recently visited an abandoned mine drainage system in West Newton on
the Sewickley Creek. At the event, they rotated through stations that included water quality, stormwater runoff,
birdhouse building, impacts of trash in an ecosystem, wetland management, and more. The system visited
treats a large iron, sulfur, and pH issue that is caused by the abandoned mineshaft discharging groundwater.
Thanks to Vanessa Whipkey of Sewickley Creek Watershed Association for organizing a great day for our
students!
