Students from the Greater Latrobe Senior High School Environmental Club recently took
a tour of the Conemaugh Dam in order to learn about the importance and operation of our local
dams. Conemaugh is one of sixteen dams in the US Army Corps Pittsburgh District that were
built in order to prevent flooding downstream. Conemaugh Dam is especially important because
it can affect the water levels at Point State Park in Pittsburgh by as much as four feet. The group
was led across the top, and then down through the inside of the dam to an area below the
Conemaugh River. The Environmental Club would like to thank park ranger April Richards and
resource manager Emily Potter for taking time out of their busy schedule to spend the morning
with students.
