The Fault in Our Stars Filmed in Pittsburgh

The Fault in Our Stars Filmed in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA seems like the hotspot for films. A book to movie film called The Fault in Our Stars ( TFiOS) was recently filmed in the city. Pittsburgh was chosen to represent Indianapolis out of all of the cities in the world to have TFiOs filmed. Many films filmed in Pittsburgh over the last few years include the Silence of the Lambs, Independence Day, Inspector Gadget, Dogma, My Bloody Valentine 3D, Adventure Land, Sorority Row, Unstoppable, I Am Number Four, Super 8, Abduction, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Jack Reacher, Fox Catcher, 8 Souls, and many more. One of the main reasons so many directors chose Pittsburgh for their movies is a huge tax credit of $60 million just for the film industry.

Pittsburgh also shares a lot of the resemblance of John Green’s favorite city, Chicago.

Green was highly impressed with the ability of the Pittsburgh Film Crew. Their reputation of having experience, being professional, and being, well, small proved to be true.

TFiOS tells a story of 16-year-old Hazel Grace who lives in Indianapolis. Hazel is burdened with cancer that had spread to her lungs. She goes to a support group that she loathes entirely. Until, she meets a boy named Augustus Waters. They spark a romance as they witness a mutual friend Isaac , who is one eye’d due to cancer, kissing his girlfriend.

The two fall in love, in hopes that they’d solve the mystery of the ending of An Imperial Affliction, Hazel’s favorite book. When Isaac loses his only eye and his girlfriend, Augustus comes to the rescue in. Augustus gets a wish (sort of like Make-A-Wish) to do something before he passes. He chooses to take Hazel to Amsterdam to meet the author of her book. And well, I really don’t want to spoil much more because you would have to read it yourself!

John Green’s book is a very smart and refreshing look on everyday life. It is and isn’t your everyday love story. The witty one liners and heartbreaking story will have you reading until four a.m. I promise.

Shailene Woodley was announced as Hazel Grace. Many fans were upset being that Hazel was so near and dear to their heart, but as soon as Shailene cut her hair, many turned in her favor. Then, as the “draft pick” started to get more and more celebrities such as Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff on it’s roster, everything started to fall in place.

Because Green’s book is heavily based around cancer, Green wanted to give real life cancer patients and survivors the chance to star in TFiOS. Bethany Leo is a 23-year-old cancer patient from this area. Like Hazel, she participates in a support group in the Strip District. 20th Century Fox contacted her group and asked for kids with cancer to audition. Beth had read the book after she was offered an audition. She said, “It has become my favorite book of all time. I can relate to it so much. It hits being a kid with cancer so well. To be apart of this film was one of the best experiences of my life and I hope there are more to come. Plus, the entire cast, including John, are amazing.”

The book has touched many people and I believe that the movie will be an even bigger success considering the director, Josh Boone, wants to keep the book and movie in replica.

John Green has also had the opportunity to sit on almost every day of the filming process. A few of the only differences so far is that Isaac (played by Nat Wolff) is blonde, not a brunette, but John (Green) says that he doesn’t care about the tiny details, so, to him, it’s not a big deal. And, how Hazel and Gus meet has been changed. Other than that, John has promised that not much else has been changed.

Many of these videos are John and Hank( John’s brother) Green’s videos about TFiOs in Pittsburgh. One even has Beth in a part!
