Students at Greater Latrobe Junior High showed how much they care by wearing yellow and writing ‘love’ on their wrist, on September 10, 2012 for Suicide Awareness Day. The response from them was tremendous and they explained to us what Suicide Awareness Day meant to them. An anonymous student said “I really enjoy days like this. It helps to show how much we care and let others know they are not alone.”
About a month later in the Senior High, another support campaign; National Spirit [Purple] Day. This campaign founded in 2010, was created to show support for the suicide epidemic among bullied teens, transformed into a national ‘holiday,’ observed by countless schools and various prominent people and organizations. Participants wore purple and displayed, “NOH8,” which according to its website, is an organization promoting equality via “education, advocacy, social media, and visual protest.”
It is important to show support for those who are bullied or ‘underdogs,’ because school is somewhere where students need to feel safe and wanted, while they are educated and prompted for their adult lives.
