Dancing, tennis, and lacrosse were taken away in an instant. An innocent hip injury changed the directory of her whole year. Emma’s battle started in eighth grade when she was first diagnosed with hip dysplasia, a disease in which the hip socket does not completely cover the ball of the upper thigh bone. Hip dislocation and severe pain may result from this. “I feel like a 90-year-old,” Emma exclaimed when walking was getting more difficult. An MRI later verified the severity of her disease, showing a ruptured labrum, a ring of cartilage that runs along the outside rim of the hip joint socket.
Following physical therapy and consultation with several doctors, it was concluded that Emma required periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) and arthroscopy to address the problem. The PAO is a complicated surgical technique that involves making a big incision and cutting the pelvic bone to rotate the hip socket and improve femoral head coverage. The procedure also involved an arthroscopy to fix the torn labrum and address any additional hip joint problems.
As the labral rips were repaired, more bone was cut from the femoral head and three screws were inserted to anchor the bone. Emma must recuperate for six to nine months before she can resume her athletic pursuits. Emma will have to miss out on activities she loves and values because of this drawn-out and difficult recuperation process.
Emma’s injury has significantly impacted her school and social life. As a junior, she is particularly stressed about falling behind in her classes, especially with the demanding schedule of AP courses. “It’s a very stressful feeling when you’re falling behind in all my classes.” Junior year is often considered one of the most critical years in high school, with students preparing for college applications, taking standardized tests, and maintaining high academic performance. The added pressure of managing her injury and recovery has made this period even more challenging.
Emma participates actively in sports and dance, making it even more challenging for her to watch her friends start their seasons without her. She has always been passionate about dance, which not only serves as a creative outlet but also as a way to connect with friends from different schools. Missing out on dance practices and performances has been particularly hard for Emma, as it means missing out on valuable time with friends and cherished memories.
