At GLSD both band and choir classes are offered as options for students. District Choir is a great opportunity for kids that enjoy singing and can try singing more complex music with teens from around Westmoreland County. In order to participate in the District Choir you must practice two songs to prepare for your audition. Here are a few members’ stories about their experience.
First time District Festival attendee Senior Ben Fearer shares, “I spent a lot of my free sets in one of the practice rooms going over the music. Sometimes I would use the flex blocks as well.” Fearer shares. In order to attend District Choir you must take time outside of school to prepare for your audition against people from other schools.”
“I felt really good about how my audition went. It went pretty smooth, it was scary a little bit, We sang about 10-ish songs altogether.” Fearer shares,
Ben had more than one favorite song from his experience. “Personally my favorite was ‘My Soul’s Been Anchored,’ but some other songs we sang were ‘I Love My Love,’ and ‘Antiphon.’ He explains, “‘Stray Cat Strut’ was sung by tenors and bases only. The Sopranos and Altos sang the song ‘Colorful.”’
Fearer also shares, “This is my first time doing District Choir, I never really liked auditions, but it was a requirement for Tri-M so I finally did it.”
Fearer also explains his favorite part about the whole experience. He said, “I am definitely making new friends with people from other schools. There were some pretty wacky kids there!¨ he said.
Junior Grace Jamison also went to the audition. She revealed that her practice paid in her audition.. “We were given two songs to practice from the selection they had. Overall I felt pretty good about my audition, I definitely was proud about it.”
Grace explains how the auditions looked. “The way this audition was laid out is there were three rooms in total. Our instructor gave us one song to practice, plus we were given the opportunity to sing it somewhere else so we could practice it without other people around,” Jamison explains.
She also shares, “This is my first year trying out for District Choir because I didn’t participate last year due to a lot of things happening throughout my sophomore year.” Jamison explains
As you can see, musicians have the opportunity to share their talents outside of GLSD throughout the year. One festival that you can audition for is called District Choir. It’s not an easy process but according to Grace Jamison and Ben Fearer it’s definitely worth it.
