Black Friday marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. It’s a day of busyness, hustling, and fast pace, not only for the shoppers but also the workers. Many young adults from Greater Latrobe work in some type of store that are having a sale for this holiday. It’s not easy for these teens, especially workers in the mall. According to Queue-it a combined 90.6million people shop in-store and online.
Mia Stynchula works at the Hollister in Westmoreland Mall. To get ready and prepared for Black Friday Mia and her coworkers dedicate time to go over what to expect. “We do Black Friday training.” Says Mia. They try to get everything out on the floor and make sure it’s easy to grab with big crowds of people. They have each person working and each one of those people have a certain zone to cover in the store so it’s more. “organized and efficient,”according to Mia.
Mia also talks about the trends of what people are buying this year from Hollister. She exclaims how popular the matching sweatpants sets are and how fast all the camo clothes are selling. The most challenging part of this day is the long hours and trying to stay organized.
Mia talks about how most days are more relaxed, “The atmosphere is very calm and tends to have busy and non busy shifts. The store is a constant revolving door of people coming in,” said Mia. The store gets a lot messier and needs constant attention. The workers always have something to do. She also touched on how the customers like to be more vocal on concerns about the inventory.
Giavanna Friedline also works at Westmoreland mall in Journeys. Gia and her coworkers make sure their most popular items are in the front of the stockroom and make sure it’s all neatly organized. Employees can move in and out to grab the products nice and easy. Journeys most popular buying trends are the Ugg tasmines which are comfy and fuzzy shoes. Adidas campuses are also a very popular trend. “It’s extremely hard to find these items since everyone wants them and it’s in high demand.” Said Gia.
For Gia the most challenging part of Black Friday is connecting with the customers one on one. There are so many people to get through and everyone is in a hurry. She also talks about how people are pushy and can be a little rude sometimes due to the long lines. Gia says how any normal day the people take the time to look over different shoes and browse but for this day people come in and know exactly what they are looking for.
Black Friday is a very eventful day. A lot of work and thought goes into how different places can make the shopping experience quick and easy for all the customers.
