In the heart of Latrobe, Pennsylvania the Greater Latrobe Boys Basketball Team symbolizes traditions and transformations. With several section titles under their belt as found in the “Hall of Distinction” they strive for excellence year after year. In fact, the success didn’t travel far as Mr. Wetzel helped claim the 1985 WPIAL Boys Basketball Championship during his sophomore year on the team.
Mr.Wetzel has been the head coach of the basketball team since 2002 and values the relationships created within his team. At the beginning of each season, the team works to build a bond that will guide them through the season. The night before the first official practice the boys have a team meal and a meeting followed by a sleepover in the gym or team room. Then, the team has an early morning wakeup call at 5:30 am with practice beginning at 6 am. Coach Wetzel said, “We hit the ground running so to speak.”
Looking to bounce back after a disappointing season that was plagued by injuries resulting in starting off without key players, the Wildcats plan to do just that. With the return of four starters Ian DeCerb, Kyle McNeil, John Wetzel, and Max Butler the team looks to kick off with power. Adding to the team’s momentum are players Brady Prohovic, Andy Tatsch, Sawyer Butina, Dom Scarton, and Owen Teslovich.
The team is not the only thing that underwent a transformation in the past year, when the Wildcats take the court the main gym will look different. Following a massive flood in the summer that left locker rooms, team rooms, and, most importantly, the main gym wood floors destroyed, a remodel of the gym was completed just in time for basketball season. Coach Wetzel is excited for the atmosphere the amplified area will bring. He said, “I just think it’s a great-looking gym. There’s nothing like a Friday night with the pep band and now the new gym and the lights.”
A sense of community was strengthened during the 22-23 school year when band director Mr. Czekaj orchestrated a new sense of school spirit, the Pep Band. A smaller unit of the Marching Band, the student musicians in attendance consist of percussion, brass, and woodwind instruments. This addition created an exciting energy at basketball games and enhanced the crowd atmosphere. The Pep Band looks to play a key factor for the third season in the months ahead.
It’s clear that the traditions and transformations set the shot for future successes. We look forward to seeing the Wildcats back on the court this season as they pave the way for a new era of excellence.
