Finding a healthy way to express oneself can be hard. Ceramics is a hands-on art course offered to Greater Latrobe senior high students. This course has three levels, each lasting a semester and progressively getting more involved. Students get to create clay-based projects using different techniques, glaze them, and then take them home. Ceramics is taught by Amy Balko who is in her 19th year of teaching it. Amy Balko tries to create an inviting environment for students to feel safe to express themselves through their art. The students are constantly given unique projects to create and personalize to their liking. Student, Abby Carroll, took all three courses, she said “I genuinely enjoyed learning new techniques throughout the different courses and most of all I liked to throw projects on the wheel because I find it calming.” Ceramics is a stress-free class that gives students a healthy outlet to express themselves. It’s important to find a way to relieve stress during the school year.
