Greater Latrobe’s National Art Honor Society is a great opportunity for aspiring artists. Senior and NAHS president, Nico Myers, has big plans for the organization this year. “Right now, the main goal is to get attendance up,” said Nico Not many people are signing up for activities or attending meetings.
“Since I was secretary last year for the organization, I saw firsthand how no attendance leads to many fun activities falling between the cracks,” said Nico. Working with other NAHS officers and Mrs. Balko, they started a grading scale for attendance at meetings and service projects. “People’s attendance with them determines their ability to go on field trips,” he said. He is also trying to work with Mrs. Balko and set a number of times attended to work with receiving the NAHS cord in future years.
With attendance up NAHS will be able to participate in more fun activities like painting a snow plow. “It was hard painting on that surface. It had a lot of ridges and unevenness. But it was a lot of fun to do. We just threw paint on and took it from there,” said Nico.
Nico got into ceramics in Mrs. Frye’s Ceramics I class. Now, he has fun throwing pottery on the wheel and is a part of an AP independent study with Mrs. Balko.
Last year during the spring art show, Nico and other members of NAHS did a pottery wheel demonstration. “I didn’t get nervous, really, I just put my airpods in and did whatever.” It was a great opportunity for people to see art being made, and to entertain the kids. The demonstration also introduced the kids to ceramics and working with clay, something they might be interested in in the future. “The kids liked watching it, I think it kept them occupied when they got restless. The older people there also really enjoyed watching the demonstration,” he said.
Nico got accepted into Delaware University and wants to go for Environmental Engineering. “I don’t think engineering and art are related in any way.” But he grew up being in nature, loving, and admiring its beauty. He was thinking about being an art teacher for a while, but he realized he didn’t want to work with kids.
