“Graduation is for the parents, but prom is just for us.” The movie Prom showcases a night to remember for high school students across the nation. With a lighthearted tone throughout the film, this Disney movie is the anthem for all high schools with prom coming up. The movie has an innocent charm to it with a variety of up and coming young actors and actresses that all have their own style to reflect the diversities of high school. Although the movie is a bit superficial in its description of high school, it takes on the brave feat of creating the status quo high school. The movie begins with the prom a week away and the high school’s prom buzz just setting in. Students are rushing around finding last minute dates and clothes.
The movie cuts into several different lives going on at once with their own prom problems. Head of the prom committee, Nova, has to redo all of the decorations that were destroyed in a fire, while trying to find her own date and battle it out with her forced helper “bad boy” Jesse who has to help fix the decorations if he wants to graduate. Kylie and her boyfriend Tyler are a shoo-in for prom king and queen. Kylie discovers that her boyfriend is cheating on her with a sophomore and, with a great amount of strength and confidence, dumps her no good boyfriend and goes to prom by herself. Mei and her boyfriend Justin have been dating since eighth grade. Their plan is to go to Ohio University together the following year but Mei is having her doubts. She loves Justin but she has another career and college path that is entirely different to “the plan” that her boyfriend has set out. Mei has a passion for fashion and wants to go to art school in New York. While this is going on sophomore Lucas is trying to get the girl of his dreams, fellow sophomore Simone while trying to balance his friendship with his best friend Corey. Lucas then finds out that Simone was the girl that Tyler (from up above story) cheated on his girlfriend Kylie with. The last story that is shown in this movie is of outcast character Lloyd. Lloyd has just realized that prom is fast approaching and hurriedly tries to find someone to go with him. The problem for Lloyd, however is that he never asked a girl out in his entire life.
As the characters each face their own struggles they obtain self knowledge and also self confidence, making this movie a heartwarming one for audiences young and old.
