Wildcats hold off the Mustangs
On Friday October 11, 2019, the Greater Latrobe Wildcats hosted the Plum Mustangs at 7pm. Both teams coming into this game had one conference win, and the winner of this game would go to the playoffs as the fifth team in the Foothills Conference.
Latrobe got the ball first to start, and they didn’t miss any chance to get on the board first. Latrobe got a 58 yard touchdown run from quarterback Bobby Fetter to put the Wildcats on top 7-0 in the first minute of play. After the Latrobe defense held Plum to a three and out on their first drive, Plum would have to punt to Latrobe. The punt would take a good Plum bounce down to the Latrobe 14 yard line. Latrobe got a big run from Dakota Morrison of 23 yards, and a 6 yard run by Logan Gustafson. Those two runs would set up a 58 yard touchdown run by quarterback Bobby Fetter to put the Wildcats up 14-0. On Plum’s next drive they got down to the Latrobe 25 yard line, and attempted a 32 yard field goal. The kick was blocked and returned for the touchdown by Logan Gustafson.
The Wildcats and the Mustangs were playing back and forth football throughout the rest of the first quarter and towards the end of the second quarter. On Plum’s last drive of the second quarter, quarterback Ryan Huber, and Tight End, Max Matolcsy connected for a nine yard gain, which set up a 15 yard rushing touchdown by running back Reed Martin. The Mustangs trailed the Wildcats 21-6 at halftime.
In the fourth quarter the Wildcats still led the Mustangs 21-6, but the Mustangs were not done yet. On the Mustangs next possession, quarterback Ryan Huber found Tight End, Max Matolcsy for 25 yards. Ryan Huber eventually took it himself for the 1 yard touchdown to make the score 21-13.
On Latrobe’s next drive, Logan Gustafson had big runs to put Latrobe inside the 10 yard line, and then Bobby Fetter took it himself 9 yards for his third touchdown of the day. Two drives later for Plum, Ryan Huber took it himself for the touchdown to make it 28-20.
All of a sudden Plum could possibly pull off the upset over Latrobe.
Latrobe’s offense couldn’t get anything going after their last touchdown, and when they punted , the ball went out of bounds at the Latrobe 25 yard line.
After Plum took the ball inside the five yard line, everyone in the stadium felt that Plum could tie the game.
On 1st and goal, Plum got a 1 yard rush. On 2nd and goal, they tried the quarterback sneak and got nothing. On 3rd and goal, they tried the quarterback sneak again, and got inside the 1 yard line. On 4th and Goal Plum went outside with Reed Martin, and was stopped by the punter Logan Gustafson at the Latrobe 3 yard line for a loss of two.
Latrobe would hold on to win 28-20, and would go to the playoffs for the second straight season.
Latrobe will be on the road to play Mid-West Tigers on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 7:30 pm.
